Rule 1: 1. أَنَّ "that" after verbs of showing and knowing
You know إِنَّ at the head of a sentence and after قَالَ (lesson 70), and أَنْ with the subjunctive (lesson 67). The third member of the family, which you have already met inside لِأَنَّ because (lesson 34), is أَنَّ that, which introduces a statement after any verb, participle or preposition other than قَالَ: يَدُلُّ التَّقْرِيرُ عَلَى أَنَّ الْعَدَدَ كَبِيرٌ the report indicates that the number is large; فُهِمَ أَنَّ الْوِزَارَةَ تَهْتَمُّ بِالْمَشْرُوعِ it is understood that the ministry is interested in the project; عَلِمْنَا أَنَّ الْحُجَّاجَ وَصَلُوا we learned that the pilgrims had arrived. Like إِنَّ, أَنَّ puts the following subject in the accusative or takes a pronoun suffix, أَنَّهُ, أَنَّهَا, أَنَّهُمْ; its predicate is nominative. Several statements may hang on one verb, each with its own أَنَّ: يَدُلُّ عَلَى أَنَّ ... وَأَنَّ ... وَأَنَّ.
يَدُلُّ التَّقْرِيرُ عَلَى أَنَّ عَدَدَ الصَّنَادِيقِ بَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ صُنْدُوقًا.
