Rule 1: 1. The imperative of defective verbs: اِمْشِ، اُدْعُ، اِبْقَ
A defective verb ends in و or ي: مَشَى يَمْشِي to walk, دَعَا يَدْعُو to call, invite, بَقِيَ يَبْقَى to stay. The imperative is cut from the imperfect as usual, but the final weak letter drops, leaving only its short vowel: يَمْشِي gives اِمْشِ walk!, يَدْعُو gives اُدْعُ call!, يَرْمِي gives اِرْمِ throw!, يَبْقَى gives اِبْقَ stay!. The prefix hamza takes kasra, or ḍamma when the imperfect vowel is u (اُدْعُ). The feminine singular and the plurals keep their endings: اِمْشِي, اِمْشُوا; اُدْعِي, اُدْعُوا; اِبْقَيْ, اِبْقَوْا. The prohibition behaves the same way: لَا تَنْسَ do not forget, لَا تَمْشِ do not walk.
اِمْشِ مَعِي إِلَى الْمَحْكَمَةِ.
imshi maʿī ilā l-maḥkamati
Walk with me to the court.
From يَمْشِي; the final ي drops and the kasra remains.
اُدْعُ الشُّهُودَ إِلَى الْمَجْلِسِ.
udʿu sh-shuhūda ilā l-majlisi
Call the witnesses to the sitting.
From يَدْعُو; hamza with ḍamma because the imperfect vowel is u.
اِبْقَيْ عِنْدَ أُمِّكِ هٰذَا الْأُسْبُوعَ.
ibqay ʿinda ummiki hādhā l-usbūʿa
Stay (f.) with your mother this week.
Feminine singular of اِبْقَ, from يَبْقَى.
لَا تَنْسَ حَقَّ أَوْلَادِكَ.
lā tansa ḥaqqa awlādika
Do not forget your children's rights.
Prohibition: jussive of يَنْسَى loses its alif maqṣūra.
اِسْعَوْا إِلَى الصُّلْحِ قَبْلَ الطَّلَاقِ.
isʿaw ilā ṣ-ṣulḥi qabla ṭ-ṭalāqi
Seek (pl.) reconciliation before divorce.
Masculine plural of اِسْعَ from سَعَى يَسْعَى.
اِرْمِ هٰذِهِ الْوَرَقَةَ، فَهِيَ غَيْرُ صَحِيحَةٍ.
irmi hādhihi l-waraqata, fa-hiya ghayru ṣaḥīḥatin
Throw away this paper; it is not correct.
