Broadcasting and Resigning

أَذَاعَتِ الْإِذَاعَةُ خَبَرَ الِاسْتِقَالَةِ فِي نَشْرَةِ الصَّبَاحِ.

adhāʿati l-idhāʿatu khabara l-istiqālati fī nashrati ṣ-ṣabāḥi

The radio broadcast the news of the resignation in the morning bulletin.

أَذَاعَتْ: third radical vowelled, so the long ā stays; the verbal noun إِذَاعَةٌ names the station itself.

أَدَارَ الْوَزِيرُ الْوِزَارَةَ أَرْبَعَ سَنَوَاتٍ ثُمَّ اسْتَقَالَ.

adāra l-wazīru l-wizārata arbaʿa sanawātin thumma staqāla

The minister ran the ministry for four years and then resigned.

لَمْ يُذِعِ التِّلْفِزْيُونُ الْبَيَانَ حَتَّى الْآنَ.

lam yudhiʿi t-tilfizyūnu l-bayāna ḥatta l-āna

Television has not broadcast the statement so far.

Jussive لَمْ يُذِعْ, shortened; the sukūn becomes kasra before the article.

أُصِيبَ عَامِلَانِ بِجِرَاحٍ وَأُسْعِفَا فِي الْحَالِ.

uṣība ʿāmilāni bi-jirāḥin wa-usʿifā fi l-ḥāli

Two workers were injured and were given first aid at once.

Passive of Form IV: أُصِيبَ for أُصْوِبَ. أَسْعَفَ is a sound verb.

تَسْتَعِينُ الْوِزَارَةُ بِخُبَرَاءَ أَجَانِبَ لِإِدَارَةِ الْمَشْرُوعِ.

tastaʿīnu l-wizāratu bi-khubarāʾa ajāniba li-idārati l-mashrūʿi

The ministry is calling on foreign experts to manage the project.

خُبَرَاءَ and أَجَانِبَ are diptotes, hence the fatḥa in the genitive.

اُخْتِيرَ الْمُذِيعُ الْجَدِيدُ مِنْ بَيْنِ مِئَةِ مُتَقَدِّمٍ.

ukhtīra l-mudhīʿu l-jadīdu min bayni miʾati mutaqaddimin

The new announcer was chosen from among a hundred applicants.

حُرِّيَّةُ الصَّحَافَةِ مِنْ أَهَمِّ حُقُوقِ الْمُوَاطِنِ.

ḥurriyyatu ṣ-ṣaḥāfati min ahammi ḥuqūqi l-muwāṭini

Freedom of the press is one of the most important rights of the citizen.

تَحَمَّلَ الْوَزِيرُ مَسْؤُولِيَّةَ الْخَطَإِ وَاسْتَقَالَ.

taḥammala l-wazīru masʾūliyyata l-khaṭaʾi wa-staqāla

The minister took responsibility for the mistake and resigned.

تَحَمَّلَ الْمَسْؤُولِيَّةَ 'to bear the responsibility' is the standard phrase.

حَصَلَتْ عَلَى الْجِنْسِيَّةِ بَعْدَ خَمْسِ سَنَوَاتٍ مِنَ الْإِقَامَةِ.

ḥaṣalat ʿala l-jinsiyyati baʿda khamsi sanawātin mina l-iqāmati

She obtained nationality after five years of residence.

لِهٰذَا الْمَوْضُوعِ أَهَمِّيَّةٌ كَبِيرَةٌ عِنْدَ الشَّبَابِ.

li-hādha l-mawḍūʿi ahammiyyatun kabīratun ʿinda sh-shabābi

This subject is of great importance to young people.

صَوَّتَتِ الْأَغْلَبِيَّةُ فِي الْمَجْلِسِ مَعَ الْحُكُومَةِ.

ṣawwatati l-aghlabiyyatu fi l-majlisi maʿa l-ḥukūmati

The majority in the council voted with the government.

اَلدِّيمُقْرَاطِيَّةُ تَقُومُ عَلَى حُرِّيَّةِ الِاخْتِيَارِ.

ad-dīmuqrāṭiyyatu taqūmu ʿalā ḥurriyyati l-ikhtiyāri

Democracy rests on freedom of choice.

Two ـِيَّة nouns and the hollow verb تَقُومُ عَلَى 'to rest on'.

قَدَّمَ مُدِيرُ الْإِذَاعَةِ اسْتِقَالَتَهُ إِلَى الْوَزِيرِ فَقَبِلَهَا.

qaddama mudīru l-idhāʿati stiqālatahu ila l-wazīri fa-qabilahā

The director of the radio submitted his resignation to the minister, who accepted it.

عُيِّنَتِ السَّيِّدَةُ نُورٌ خَلَفًا لَهُ وَتَوَلَّتْ مَنْصِبَهَا أَمْسِ.

ʿuyyinati s-sayyidatu nūrun khalafan lahu wa-tawallat manṣibahā amsi

Mrs Nūr was appointed as his successor and took up her post yesterday.

خَلَفًا: accusative answering 'as what?'.

اِخْتَارَ الْمَجْلِسُ الدُّكْتُورَ سَامِيًا رَئِيسًا لِلَّجْنَةِ.

ikhtāra l-majlisu d-duktūra sāmiyan raʾīsan li-l-lajnati

The council chose Dr Sāmī as chairman of the committee.

Two accusatives: the person chosen and the office.
