Rule 1: 1. فَعْلٌ: the commonest type, for actions done to something
The pattern فَعْلٌ, a single syllable with sukūn on the middle radical, is the usual verbal noun of transitive verbs of the type فَعَلَ: ضَرْبٌ striking, فَتْحٌ opening, نَصْرٌ helping, أَكْلٌ eating, نَقْلٌ transporting, قَتْلٌ killing, تَرْكٌ leaving. Weak verbs keep the same shape: بَيْعٌ selling from بَاعَ, قَوْلٌ saying from قَالَ, جَرْيٌ running from جَرَى, ظَنٌّ thinking from ظَنَّ, وَصْفٌ describing from وَصَفَ. When in doubt about a transitive verb, try فَعْلٌ first.
